Prayer Targets: National Debt History, Obamacare-Debt Deal, VVS, Camp Shelby, CA Bathroom Law

October 17, 2013

If thou shalt hearken diligently [to obey] the voice of the LORD... thou shalt lend unto many nations, and...not borrow... if thou wilt not... the stranger... shall lend to thee... He shall be the head, and thou shalt be the tail. Moreover... curses shall... pursue... and overtake thee, till thou be destroyed... Deut 28: all; esp. v1, 12, 15, 43-45

Dear Praying Friends,

Over 220 years, from George Washington's inauguration (1789) to Barack Obama's (2009), the national debt grew from $75 million to $10.6 trillion dollars. In just over four it has climbed to $17 trillion, nearly $150,000 per American tax-payer (see Debt Clock). If Congress does not restrain federal spending, the debt will likely exceed $20 trillion by the close of President Obama's 2nd term. Last night's vote means the spending will continue, for now. Some history:

The Bank of the United States was conceived in 1790 to deal with the war debt and to put the government on sound financial footing... [Alexander] Hamilton, President George Washington's Treasury Secretary, was the architect... In addition to the main office in Philadelphia, the Bank had eight branches... The First Bank prefigured the Federal Reserve [but] differed from it... by offering commercial loans... (see History from the U.S. Federal Bank in Minneapolis)

Hamilton called for the new federal government to assume the Revolutionary War debt of the Continental Congress (paper "Continentals" had become virtually worthless), and to assume the accumulated debt of the individual states, making a single, comprehensive national debt. Instead of paying off the debt as a priority, he wanted to refinance it, by issuing treasury notes to be repaid to investors over time with interest, by the U.S. Government. The federal government could use borrowed money for other projects as well. According to

Hamilton's political legacy is embodied in the Federal Bank... His opponents saw [it] as an evil tool for expanding the power of the federal government at the expense of the states. Hamilton is regarded as the "Father of the National Debt" because he felt that a national debt was really a "blessing." The more money the government owed to the people of the country, the more the people had a stake in the success of the country!

Among the Patriots who opposed Hamilton's plan was Thomas Jefferson:

To preserve independence, we must not let our rulers load us with perpetual debt. We must make our election between economy and liberty, or profusion and servitude. If we run into such debts as that we must be taxed in our meat and in our drink, in our necessaries and our comforts, in our labors and our amusements, for our callings and our creeds, as the people of England are, our people, like them, must come to labor sixteen hours in the twenty-four, give the earnings of fifteen of these to the government for their debts and daily expenses, and the sixteenth being insufficient to afford us bread, we must live, as they now do, on oatmeal and potatoes, have no time to think, no means of calling the mismanagers to account, but be glad to obtain subsistence by hiring ourselves to rivet their chains on the necks of our fellow-sufferers." (Letter from Jefferson to Samuel Kercheval, July 12, 1816)

Having borrowed recklessly in recent years, our children have already become servants to our government "tax-masters" and the foreign lenders to whom they have indebted us. Obamacare means permanent servitude. Our elected leaders who value American liberty are standing up to powerful evil forces, seen and unseen. We must pray, pray, pray for them!

Senate Passes Debt Deal; House Bends - Last night, 87 House Republicans joined all 198 Democrats to pass, 285-144, the Senate Continuing Resolution (CR). Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid and Senate Minority Leader, Mitch McConnell, crafted the deal to fund the government through Jan. 15 and raise the debt limit through Feb 7, but the "deal" did nothing to resolve conservatives' concerns; 144 House Republicans voted "NO!" House leaders put forth their own proposals on Monday and Tuesday, but tiny adjustments to Obamacare did not satisfy House conservatives, who first called for total defunding, and later a year's delay on the "individual mandate." Many conservatives saw this as their only chance to protect constituents from the healthcare law, already proven a disaster and in which abortion funding and religious liberty violations remain. Both houses raced to find a solution before Thursday, when the Treasury Department would have begun running out of maneuvering room to service the debt. President Obama had repeatedly warned that the U.S. would default on its debts and lose our high credit ratings. But experts say the nation's cash flow is more than adequate to service our debt; that any default would be an intentional decision by the President. (see GOP Bends, Can Kicked, Congress Weakened, Debt to Double under Obama, Pew on Debt, Fix for Phantom Default, "Trick or Treat" - Tony's Perspective).

  • May the House be prepared in January not to yield its Constitutional power to control the purse strings of the nation! May God help Congress to excise abortion and violations of religious liberty from Obamacare (Lev 25:10; Ps 133; Is 5:20; 10:1; 61:1; 1 Jn 2:9, 11).

2013 Values Voter Summit - This past weekend, VVS provided information you will need to pray effectively over our nation. Watch the free, online video messages by Tony Perkins, Gen. Jerry Boykin, Ted Cruz, Dr. Ben Carson, Mark Levin, Joel Rosenberg, Sen. Rick Santorum, Gov. Bobby Jindal, Gary Bauer, Gov. Mike Huckabee, Sen. Jim DeMint, Bishop E.W. Jackson, Mat Staver, Starr Parker, Lila Rose, Glen Beck, Todd Starnes, Joseph Farah, Janet Porter, Dr. Rick Scarborough, Frank Gaffney, Nonie Darwish, Ken Blackwell, Josh Duggar, Kristan Hawkins, Cal Thomas, Atty. Gen. Edwin Meese, and many more (see Values Voter Summit).

  • May groups everywhere watch the videos and pray over these matters with power! (Hos 4:6; Eph 6:10-20; 1 Th 5:17; 2 Tim 2:15; Rev 12:11)

More Anti-Christian Indoctrination in the Military - Fox News Reporter Todd Starnes reported the latest in the long list of acts that show that our military has taken a hostile posture against Bible-believing Christians and evangelical Christianity. Last week, at an Army training event at Camp Shelby, Mississippi, several active duty and reserve troops were told that the American Family Association (AFA) should be classified as a domestic hate group. AFA is a long respected Christian ministry with multiple outlets, including American Family Radio (which airs Tony Perkins's live program, "Washington Watch," from 5-6 PM ET, M-F). The briefing listed the AFA alongside domestic hate groups like the Ku Klux Klan, Neo-Nazis, the Black Panthers and the Nation of Islam. AFA was headlined on a slide showing Westboro Baptist Church preacher Fred Phelps holding a sign with an anti-homosexual slur. One soldier in attendance snapped a photo and sent it to Starnes. AFA has no affiliation with Westboro or Phelps. A chaplain present defended AFA, but was told: "They don't like gays" and refer "to gays as sinners and heathens and derogatory terms." The soldiers were told they could face punishment for participating in groups considered to be hate groups. An Army spokesman has since issued a disclaimer, saying this event was isolated, but AFA President Tim Wildmon says he has received similar reports from troops across America. (see Snapshot of Intolerance, Pentagon Corrects, AFA Skeptical; sign Military Religious Freedom Petition).

  • May God intervene to stop this trend which began in earnest with the overturn of Don't Ask Don't Tell, and has accelerated rapidly since. May He help AFA, FRC and all who are working to stop this trend! (Ps 35:7, 9-13; 69:4-9; 119:126; Is 64:1-5; Mt 5:10)

California Co-Ed Bathroom Law - Governor Jerry Brown signed into law, AB 1266, called by many the "Co-Ed Bathroom Bill." It allows elementary and secondary school students to use restrooms, shower facilities, and join sports teams based upon their "perceived gender" rather than their designated gender at birth. Californians have less than a month to submit 505,000 certified signatures to stop the law or it will go into effect in January (Hear Tony Perkins's interview California Pastor Jack Hibbs, see Privacy for All Students, get Petitions here).

  • May the people of California, Christians and non-Christians rise up to overturn this law! (Ex 18:21; Ps 73:22-28; 110:3; Is 60:1-2; Pr 6:27; 1 Cor 6:18; 7:23; Eph 5:6-15; 1 Tim 4:12; 5:2)

Finally, VVS was a powerful and God-blessed time of learning and inspiration. Please watch as much of it as you can and pray over the issues as you do so. And thank you for praying!
