"When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn." Proverbs 29:2

Dear Praying Friends

Election Day is November 4, 2014. Noah Webster, the author of the renowned Dictionary that bears his name and whom some refer to as the "Father of American Education" (see last week's Prayer Targets), had much to say about American citizenship and the Christian's stewardship responsibility to vote:

In selecting men for office, let principle be your guide. Regard not the particular sect or denomination of the candidate -- look to his character as a man of known principle, of tried integrity, and undoubted ability for the office... Scriptures teach... that rulers should be men who rule in the fear of God, able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness. But if we had no divine instruction on the subject, our own interest would demand of us a strict observance of the principle of these injunctions. And it is to the neglect of this rule of conduct in our citizens, that we must ascribe the multiplied frauds, breaches of trust, peculations and embezzlements of public property which astonish even ourselves; which tarnish the character of our country; which disgrace a republican government...

When a citizen gives his suffrage (vote) to a man of known immorality, he abuses his trust; he sacrifices not only his own interest, but that of his neighbor; he betrays the interest of his country. Nor is it of slight importance, that men elected to office should be able men, men of talents equal to their stations, men of mature age, experience, and judgment; men of firmness and impartiality... It may be held as generally true, that respect spontaneously attaches itself to real worth; and the man of respectable virtues, never has occasion to run after respect (Noah Webster, Letters to a Young Gentleman Commencing his Education, 1823).

John Jay, first Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court wrote:

Providence has given to our people the choice of their rulers, and it is the duty, as well as the privilege and interest of our Christian nation to select and prefer Christians for their rulers (Letter from John Jay to John Murray, Jr., October 12, 1816). Whether our Religion permits Christians to vote for infidel rulers is a question which merits more consideration than it seems yet to have generally received, either from the clergy or the laity. It appears to me that what the prophet said to Jehoshaphat about his attachments to Ahab affords a salutary lesson... "Shouldest thou help the ungodly and love them that hate the Lord?" 2 Chr xix, 2 (Letter from John Jay to Jedediah Morse, January 1, 1813. Johnston, Correspondence of Jay from The Founders on Religion, James H. Hutson, 2005).

Congress has recessed until after Election Day allowing members time to devote to their re-election campaigns. Voters will decide who will occupy all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 1/3 of the 100 U.S. Senate seats. Whom we elect will be highly consequential, given the troubles our nation faces and the perilous times in which we live.

iPledge Sunday 2014 Coalition - FRC is part of a growing coalition of Christian organizations that is encouraging Christians to help get out the vote this November. Pollsters tell us far too many Christians do not vote. A sizable percentage of evangelical voters are not registered to vote; far more fail to vote on Election Day. The Coalition is out to change this tragic fact! Scripture instructs us to vote for leaders who "fear God," who are "men of truth," who "hate covetousness" (Exodus 18:21). It is our privilege and right as Americans to vote on Election Day, but as Christians it is our sacred duty to vote for men and women, who, as best as we discern, are people of integrity and will uphold our values once in office.

Consider the matters of debate before us: the future of marriage in America, taxpayer-funded abortion vs. a culture of life; the preservation of religious liberty; America's response to war in the Middle East and terrorism on American soil; fading support for Israel; the troubled "Affordable Care Act" (ObamaCare); the kind of education our children will receive and the kind of nation will they inherit -- These will all be largely determined by those we elect or don't elect in November.

Just over two weeks remain before iPledge Sunday 2014! And in just over two weeks more, the Election! God calls believers, "first of all," to pray for Kings and all those who are in authority (1 Tim 2:1-8). Visit the website and join us and the iPledgeSunday 2014 Coalition to:

  • PRAY FOR THE EVENT - We're asking God to multiply the number of churches, groups and families across America that will view the special live evening webcast on Sunday, October 12th at; that the message will reach as many believers as possible.
  • PRAY FOR GOD'S PEOPLE - That they will hear the message, take it to heart, and take the "1, 2, 3 Vote pledge" to 1) Register and vote themselves, AND, 2) Reach out to two other believers to register to vote, AND 3) Resolve that all three will follow through and vote their biblical values.
  • PRAY FOR THE ELECTIONS - Between now and November 4th: that Christians will vote their values en masse for the best qualified candidates they can identify in the November Election.

If you are part of a prayer organization, ask your leaders to join the iPledge Sunday Coalition!

If you are a pastor, sign up to host a showing in your church. If you are a lay leader, encourage your pastor to host the event. If not, then please sign up to watch the event -- either at a host church or at home online. Also sign up as an individual or your prayer organization to pray as outlined above. Please continue to make the elections a top priority on their prayer list in the days immediately ahead. Find more voter tools here.

  • May God bless iPledge Sunday 2014 and may each of the coalition goals be achieved; that unprecedented numbers of Christians will vote! (Gen 28:3; Num 23:20; Ps 110:3; Gal 6:9)

Values Voter Summit - VVS is FRC's most visible annual event, cosponsored by several of America's leading Christian and conservative institutions, all of which share FRC's values and goals. It will begin Friday morning and close on Sunday with a morning church service where Tony Perkins will deliver the message. At the Summit, Christian voters will learn about the issues at stake in the coming election, meet key Washington newsmakers, and preview potential 2016 presidential candidates. The line-up of speakers includes the most sought-after conservative leaders in America. Scheduled plenary sessions and breakout workshops will deepen your understanding of issues about which you are most interested. You'll return home better equipped to make a difference in your community and state.

This year, Meriam Ibrahim and her family will make their first appearance at a public event since Meriam, her toddler son and infant daughter were released from the disease-ridden Sudanese prison. Recall that she spent months there awaiting torture and execution: a hundred lashes and death-by-hanging. Her crime? Refusing to renounce faith in Jesus Christ! Meriam will receive FRC's first Cost of Discipleship Award for her courage and dedication to Christ, representing thousands around the world who are giving their all for Jesus Christ. Attended by grassroots activists from across the nation, many have heard the call to public service at the Summit, finding God's call be "salt and light" in our culture in this way. If you cannot attend in person, the plenary session will be aired, live, on

  • Please pray throughout the event, for the speakers, the attendees, the reporters, the viewers all over the world -- that the sum total of the event will be life and nation-changing! (Ps 67:1-7; 121: all; Pr 4:7; Is 60:1-2; Jn 9:4; Rom 8:28; Titus 2:15; 2 Tim 2:15; Rev 12:11)

Finally, President Obama has ordered the bombing of ISIS positions in Syria to proceed, announcing just yesterday a coalition made up of Muslim nations, our NATO Allies, strangely missing. One of coalition members, Qatar, has been a major donor to Hamas, having provided millions to finance rockets used against Israel and tunnels dug for terrorist access to Israel, America's closest and only true democratic ally in the Middle East. God warned and punished Israel for entering evil national alliances instead of trusting God to be her Defense (Is 31:1). Only God can sort this out. Please pray, and thank you for praying!
