For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. Romans 1:18-19
Dear Praying Friends,
Richard Owen Roberts is founder of International Awakening Ministries (see R.O. Roberts Trust). He studied at Gordon, Whitworth, and Fuller Seminary and pastored churches in Idaho, Oregon, Washington and California. Since 1975, he and his family have lived near Wheaton College, Ill., where his collection of 9,000+ books relating to historic revivals and awakenings serves as nucleus of the Billy Graham Center Library. He has written extensively on these topics:
The sacred record makes clear that God Himself instituted and regulated human government... it was designed to guarantee the unalienable rights of both the Creator and the created.
The founding fathers... understood that government had the capacity to hamper or restrict the rights with which God Himself had endowed His people. Many... had personally experienced the destruction of their own rights by oppressive rulers. It was their profound conviction that when this happened, government should be either altered or abolished and replaced by a new government.
We need to realize that whenever government seeks to grant rights to individuals and classes that God Himself has not endowed, and whenever this granting of rights by humans to humans impinges upon the rights that the Almighty has reserved for Himself, that government ceases to be of God. Neither is it any longer truly for the people, for the best interest of the governed can never be served by a government which elevates itself to the stature of God. When this happens, either the people themselves will alter or abolish their corrupt government, or God will, in His own time and way, accomplish that nation's destruction.
God has... revealed the specific areas in which He will... control the rights affecting man. These restricted areas were long weighed, regarded, and yielded to by the American people. They are set forth in the Ten Commandments which were, in the early years of our nation, a prominent part of every schoolroom. Their principles were incorporated into our national laws and into the laws of our several states. Included in the realms where God never endowed man with a right of choice are His restrictions on man's relationship to Himself, the taking of human life, the use of sex, the appropriation of the private property of others, and the regulation of truth and falsehood.
God Alone Is to Be Worshipped - When God endowed man with certain unalienable rights, He did not include the right to worship any god he chose or no god at all. God never granted man the right to worship the god of his own imagination. The God who made man has always insisted that the creature worship and serve his Creator. There is but one true and living God. He, and He alone, is to be worshipped and served. This nation was built on the conviction that there is a Creator God whose mercy is necessary to the well-being of all its peoples. There is no reason to suppose that it was ever the intention of the founding fathers of this nation to grant the freedom to future generations of Americans to make gods of their own imaginations, to worship and serve what they made, and thus to turn this nation from Christianity to paganism. The religious freedom granted by our national documents was not freedom to be irreligious. What was guaranteed was the freedom of every denomination of Christians to practice Christianity according to the dictates of their own consciences. All that was to be required of them was that they demean themselves peaceably and as good subjects of the nation. Our fathers guaranteed that no sect or denomination should ever be established by law, but it was absolutely not their intent to guarantee the right of the godless to turn the nation away from the Christianity upon which it was founded and into a cesspool of iniquitous infidelity. High Court Won't Block Court-Imposed Same-Sex "Marriage"- On Monday, the U.S. Supreme Court denied certiorari (i.e., announced it will not hear appeals) from five states ordered by federal courts to license same-sex "marriages." The states: Indiana, Oklahoma, Utah, Virginia and Wisconsin had appealed to their federal courts of jurisdiction, the 4th, 7th and 10th Circuits, each of which ruled against their state's natural marriage amendment as a violation of the U.S. Constitution. Activist federal courts have overridden states' rights and in many cases the people, who have expressed their convictions via the arduous process of amending their state constitutions. The New York Times wrote that in all five states, "county clerks... responded almost instantly... and same-sex couples rushed to obtain legal marriages."
The Supreme Court decision will also impact other states within the jurisdiction of these three circuit courts: the 4th Circuit: Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and West Virginia (Maryland has already legalized same-sex "marriage" through the legislature); the 7th Circuit: Indiana and Wisconsin (Illinois has already legalized by the legislature); and the 10th Circuit: Oklahoma, Utah, Colorado, Kansas, and Wyoming (New Mexico was legalized by court ruling). Lawsuits are underway to overturn marriage in all the states where traditional marriage is law. With these rulings a majority of Americans have had same-sex "marriage" imposed upon them (see Graphic), mostly forced upon them by activist courts. In 30 states where voters were allowed to vote, 41,020,548 explicitly cast their vote to keep natural marriage the law. A majority of voters in only three states: Maine, Maryland and Washington State, cast 3,406,306 votes in favor of same-sex "marriage." In fact, a Pew Research Poll shows that support for gay "marriage" has actually dropped by 5% nationwide since 2010.
Governors Nikki Haley (R) of South Carolina and Matt Mead (R) of Wyoming, both under the jurisdictions of same-sex "marriage" imposing circuit courts, have declared their intention to stand firmly on their pro-marriage laws. Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee has said, "It is shocking that many elected officials, attorneys and judges think that a court ruling is the 'final word; It most certainly is not. The courts are one branch of government, and equal to the other two, but not superior to either and certainly not to both. Even if the other two branches agree with the ruling, the people's representatives have to pass enabling legislation to authorize same sex marriage, and the president (or governor in the case of the state) has to sign it. Otherwise, it remains the court's opinion. It is NOT the 'law of the land' as is often heralded." (see Story; SCOTUS Turns Down Marriage Proposal; Speak Now or Forever Forfeit Marriage; Rush to Marry; Pew Poll, Huckabee)
San Francisco's 9th Circuit Imposes Faux Marriage on Idaho, Nevada - Following the U.S. Supreme Court's announcement on Monday, the 9th Circuit Court upheld a pro same-sex "marriage" District Court ruling in Idaho on Tuesday, and overruled a pro-natural marriage District Court ruling in Nevada, thus imposing same-sex "marriage" on both states and opening the way for district judges in their jurisdiction to tyrannize all of the states in their Districts, which, besides Idaho and Nevada, include Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington, Guam, and the Northern Mariana Islands. On Wednesday, after an emergency request to the U.S. Supreme Court by the State of Idaho for an immediate stay on the 9th Circuit ruling, Associate Justice Anthony Kennedy granted a temporary stay pending a response from same-sex "marriage" advocates, after which a decision would be made as to extending the stay (see 9th Circuit: Nevada, Idaho; FRC Press Release: A Lawless Ruling).
- Father, please build faith in your people to pray and believe for an ultimate victory for biblical marriage in America. Those who do not know you are blind. Send sweeping revival among your churches and an awakening of biblical faith that saturates those who do not know you, in every "mountain" of culture in our nation - bring heartfelt repentance and a recommitment to the things that are important to you - including marriage. May our judges and legislators courageously defend marriage; and shake off the curse they are bringing upon our nation. Cause our highest court to grant Idaho a permanent stay; to review these and other marriage cases and to affirm the constitutional right of states to decide who is qualified to marry under their own state law (Ex 18:21; 2 Sam 23:3; Ps 75:4-8; Mt 24:37-39; Acts 3:19; Heb 11 & 12 all, esp. 11:6; Jude 1:1-25).
Finally, please pray for schools struggling with how to deal with transgendered children. Pray for FRC's Church Ministries team, which has been conducting a series of special briefings for pastors in North Carolina, Arkansas and Florida. Up next is Overland Park, Kansas, October 23rd and Anchorage, Alaska, October 28th. If you missed the Day of Prayer for the Peace of Jerusalem on Sunday, please pray and mark Sunday, October 4th, on next year's calendar (Ps. 122:6)! Many years ago, Tony Perkins welcomed Tom Demaree and his Pentecost Walk Team to Baton Rouge. Tom was on his first of many Across-America Prayer Walks. Tom will walk to Washington, D.C. this year, praying along the way for unity and repentance in 50 state capitals and 50 more culture capitals. Please pray for Tom and join him when he walks through your state! Please do not fail to pray and participate in this comingSunday evening's iPledge Sunday simulcast in your church, prayer group or home via the web. Pray for breakthrough motivation for Christians to vote in the November election, which is just weeks away. As always, thank you for praying!
