Prayer Targets: Gen. Patton's Christmas Prayer; SPLC's Teaching Tolerance; Erdogan; Taking a Stand

December 11, 2019

"Praise awaits you, our God, in Zion; to you our vows will be fulfilled. You who answer prayer, to you all people will come. When we were overwhelmed by sins, you forgave our transgressions." (Psalm 65:1-3)

Dear Praying Friends,

Scott Manning (bio) earned his B.A. in Military History (magna cum laude), and his M.A. in Ancient and Classical History from American Military University. His published works, papers, panels chaired, book reviews, and encyclopedia entries showcase military and classical scholarship as well as his interest in and research of popular culture. This summary of General George Patton's prayer can be found on his website:

General Patton's Prayer - Many know the story of General Patton's prayer for better weather in order to more efficiently kill the Germans in the winter of 1944. Few know of his Christmas Greeting that was issued along with the prayer, which he describes in War as I Knew It.

Contrary to popular belief, the prayer was not ordered to be written during the Battle of the Bulge. It was on the 14th of December that General Patton had the famous exchange with Chaplain O'Neill to write a prayer for good weather and to give a copy to each member of the Third Army. The Chaplain mentioned that it's not a customary practice to pray for clear weather in order to kill fellow men.

Patton's response was direct, "Chaplain, are you teaching me theology or are you the Chaplain of the Third Army? I want a prayer."

After working out the logistics, each member of the Third Army (approximately 250,000 at the time) was issued a small card on the 22nd of December 1944. By this time, the Battle of the Bulge was underway.

On one side of the card was the famous prayer:

"Almighty and most merciful Father, we humbly beseech Thee, of Thy great goodness, to restrain these immoderate rains with which we have had to contend. Grant us fair weather for Battle. Graciously hearken to us as soldiers who call upon Thee that armed with Thy power, we may advance from victory to victory, and crush the oppression and wickedness of our enemies, and establish Thy justice among men and nations. Amen."

When Patton originally ordered the cards made, some of the General's men convinced him to include a Christmas greeting for the troops. It was at this time Patton took a seat at his desk beneath the contemporary ceiling fans and penned something special.

On the reverse side, the card had a personal message from the General:

"To each officer and soldier in the Third United States Army, I wish a Merry Christmas. I have full confidence in your courage, devotion to duty, and skill in battle. May God's blessing rest upon each of you on this Christmas Day.

G.S. Patton, Jr.
Lieutenant General
Commanding, Third United States Army"

The next day, the weather cleared and remained perfect for about six days while the Third Army pushed North to relieve the 101st Airborne at Bastogne.

Upon reviewing the weather, Patton said of the Chaplain, "*** ****! Look at the weather. That O'Neill sure did some potent praying. Get him up here. I want to pin a medal on him."

The next day, the Chaplain made it to Patton's office. He shook the Chaplain's hand and said, "Chaplain, you're the most popular man in this Headquarters. You sure stand in good with the Lord and the soldiers." Chaplain O'Neill then received a Bronze Star Medal.

On Christmas Day, Patton wrote in his journal that the day "dawned clear and cold; lovely weather for killing Germans, although the thought seemed somewhat at variance with the spirit of the day." Patton went on to write how they managed to provide every soldier with turkey. Those in the front had turkey sandwiches while everyone else had hot turkey. (Scott Manning, Dec. 17, 2006). Read the whole story from the 1950 government document as it appeared in the Oct. 6, 1971 Review of the News. O'Neill was a retired Brigadier General living in Pueblo, CO.

SPLC's "Teaching Tolerance" Targets Kids -- The infamous Southern Poverty Law Center, whose online "hate map" inspired an LGBTQ activist to attempt a shooting massacre at FRC's Washington headquarters in 2012, and who openly persists in efforts to characterize FRC as a "hate group," is now engaging in its own assault on our public school children. Wherever they can find a welcome mat from liberal public school administrators and teachers, they attempt to indoctrinate our children with the sexual ideology and agenda of the LGBTQ activists, injecting into their young minds the transgender confusion that has led to a sharp increase in gender dysphoria. If not treated, such dysphoria can lead to the desire for "transition surgery" and can lead to serious regret, with a suicide rate 19 times that of the general population. Despite what activists say, LBGTQ behavior is not a matter of genetics. Yet this dishonest ideology has spread like wildfire, even into some churches and denominations who now embrace and approve these ideologies and practices.

Eighteen states now have laws to prevent those with unwanted same-sex attractions from obtaining counselling. And some states make it illegal for parents to prevent their minor children from obtaining opposite-sex hormones and "transition surgery." What about parental rights? Such laws and such indoctrination of children is child abuse of the worst kind. How can loving Christians stand by and say and do nothing while this behavioral plague is being forced upon our children, families, and our society, including the public schools for which we pay huge tax dollars even as they are failing in the fundamentals of education?

There are things parents can do. First, every parent needs to be educated on this problem. The SPLC is engaged in a direct assault on American families by stealing the innocence of children through exposure to biblically prohibited sex of all kinds and now the surreal world of gender identity confusion.

Take time to get involved, beginning with education and prayer, and whatever actions the Lord shows you to do to make a difference, including: conference with your school principal, teachers, and counselors; make sure you opt your children out of unbiblical "sex education"; make sure you give them proper sex education at home so as to preempt these false prophets; write letters to the editor; participate in specialized community groups or start one. Make sure your church is headed in the right direction. Pray over this threat to our children and families. Make sure your church is getting educated and making its voice heard or preparing to do so on these issues so that when they come to your town, your church is ready. Also, attend school board meetings, but most of all prepare and guide your own children. • Father, too many Christians are not only ceasing to be salt and light, but are accepting darkness into their schools and churches and homes. God, help us! Stir us to pray and take action over these threats to our own homes and even our entire nation. Help us to get educated and to educate our fellow believers. Let none of us or our children be caught unaware and unprotected. In Jesus' name, Amen. (Mt 5:13-15; 18:6; Eph 5:1-14; Jude: all)

Finally, please add these items to your prayer list: 1) Alabama Sheriff Nick Smith has not only refused to yield to the Freedom From Religion Foundation but has rebuked them for demandingthat his office cease from urging prayer over criminal activities, tragedies, and other trouble their office and community face. It is essential that freedom-loving Americans stand up and resist efforts to hinder, restrain, inhibit, or prevent them from exercising their religious liberties. Christians simply cannot submit to fear, apathy, or indifference in the current environment of hostility toward Christianity and increasingly other organized religion; 2) Pray for Israel, Iran, and the Middle East. Turkish President Erdogan, flush with a sense of power after invading northern Syria, is increasing his reach for power throughout the Middle East. Read this short piece from the Jerusalem Post; 3) While we enjoy Christmas rest and celebration, the enemy of our souls will not be resting. Plan to lead your family in prayer for our nation, our leaders, and our countrymen around the world. Scripture teaches that the joy, peace, and salvation that the angels announced is His will for all people in every country in every age. May we make Christmas time a time of joyful prayer for all men, women, boys, and girls at home and around the world! (Luke 2:13-14; 1 Tim 2:1-8)

Thank you for praying! And Merry Christmas!
