For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. (Ephesians 6:12)

Dear Praying Friends,

The late Derek Prince (1915-2003) (bio) was born in India to a British military family. He became a Greek, Latin, Hebrew, and Aramaic scholar at Eton College, Cambridge University (England), and Hebrew University (Israel). After encountering Jesus Christ, Prince devoted his life to the study and teaching of God's word. His 1973 book Shaping History through Prayer and Fasting helped guide the present-day prayer movement. This excerpt is from his final book, Secrets of a Prayer Warrior:

Satan seeks to control the empires of earth through its rulers in order to make its leaders and governments instruments of his will. We must pray for our governments in order to frustrate Satan and to bring our governments under heaven's control [1 Tim 2:1-2]. That is why Paul said to pray "first of all" for those in government. When we criticize our leaders, we tell the world that our prayers have failed, we've not done our job. We have allowed dark angels to crowd in over the buildings where vital decisions are made that affect not only us but also the entire Kingdom of God. We must not tolerate that Satanic invasion.

Our Position in the Heavenly Places - The decisive factor in this great war with Satan is just one thing: praying believers. We are the ones who tip the scale for victory on God's side. This is an astonishing fact, but Scripture makes it clear that this is so.

Our prayers are not unimportant; they are not secondary. They are the decisive issue in the entire spiritual conflict. The way we pray will decide the way the universe goes [when we pray according to God's word -- consider Esther's and Daniel's prayers]. I do not believe that is an exaggeration; I believe it is literal truth. Nothing grieves me more than to hear believers talk as if they were unimportant. True, you are insignificant, but because you are insignificant God can use you to demonstrate His wisdom, His grace and His power... You are extremely significant (2 Cor 4:15).

Paul helps us understand our position in the spiritual conflict. "[God raised Christ] from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all principality and power [all rulership and realm of authority]...and [God has] raised us up together, and made us sit together [with Christ] in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus" (Eph 1:3, 20-21; 2:6) ...

We accept by faith that, in the Spirit, we are seated with Christ far above Satan and his realm. Physically we are here on earth, but spiritually, because of our relationship with Christ, we are with Him...We are surrounded by a great a cloud of witnesses (see Heb 12:1) ... We are a spectacle to men, to angels, and to the whole world... God is showing in us -- the weak, the unworthy, the base, the rejected -- all the riches of His grace, His glory and His wisdom. Because there is nothing in us that could ever take the credit. (1 Cor 1:28).

Our Spiritual Weapons -- If we are involved in spiritual warfare against a spiritual enemy, it is obvious that we must have spiritual weapons. Carnal weapons are of no use... You cannot blast demons and rebellious angels out of the way with a tank. This is what Paul said: "For though we walk in the flesh [though we live in the body], we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal [not material] but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds" (2 Cor 10:3-4).

Whose strongholds? Satan's. Where does he have his strongholds? Maybe in our governments. Maybe there are men and women in vital administrative offices who have given Satan strongholds. Whose business is it to pull them down? Ours. And we have been given the weapons. The weapons of our warfare "[cast] down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God" (v.5).

We are the ones who are going to do it. [Prince writes of the offensive weapons God has given us with which to pull down strongholds, the Word of God, the name of Jesus and the blood of Jesus]. We launch these weapons by the means of prayer, praise, preaching and testimony. Paul lists the spiritual armor that the Christian soldier needs for spiritual conflict: the first five items of armor are all defensive, to protect us. The sixth is the offensive weapon: is the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God (Eph 6:14-17).

The perfect pattern of how to use the sword of the Spirit is Jesus' encounter with Satan. Three times Satan approached Jesus with a temptation, and each time Jesus drove him back with the same phrase: It is written (see Matthew 4). Jesus used no other weapon but the spoken word of the Lord. Jesus had memorized long passages of Scripture. When Satan confronted Him, He did not need to consult a concordance or go to a library. He had already stored up the Scriptures in His memory. Surely we need to do that today, just as much as Jesus did! (From Derek Prince, Secrets of a Prayer Warrior, 2009, ch. 6, edited for length)

The true prayer warriors I know are devoted students of the word. If you want to have power with God, you must be devoted to his word. FRC President Tony Perkins has prepared a simple but excellent Bible reading plan intended for families. But it will do wonders for individuals or any kind of group, large of small. The FRC staff is reading through and discussing the Scriptures daily. I urge you to join us right away to strengthen your foundation for prayer and spiritual warfare. You are going to need it for this challenging year for our nation! Sign up today at

Pro-Life Month -- January each year is a time for believers everywhere to pray for the organizations that are highlighting the cause of life and the horrible truths surrounding the practice of abortion in our nation. It is also a time to participate in pro-life activities, publicize the cause of life via letters to the editor and pastors preaching sermons, to contribute to pregnancy resource centers and other pro-life organizations, and generally to get more involved, not just in January, but year-round. It is also a good time to connect with our elected representatives to thank those who are voting for and leading the cause of life, and to challenge those who are advocating for the taking of innocent human life. Here are some great opportunities:

Sanctity of Human Life Sunday -- This Sunday, January 19, is Sanctity of Human Life Sunday. Encourage your pastor to set aside time to pray in the services and speak about the cause of protecting human life. We have a number of resources for pastors in the tools section of as well as helpful resources on our website: (See Biblical Principles for Pro-Life Engagement; The Best Pro-Life Arguments for Secular Audiences; Top 10 Myths About Abortion; The Real Planned Parenthood: Leading the Culture of Death - 2020 Edition)

National Memorial for the Preborn and their Mothers and Fathers -- The National Pro-Life Religious Council, Priests for Life, Faith and Liberty DC, and Gospel of Life Ministries will be presenting the 26th annual nondenominational national prayer service preceding the March for Life at the Daughters of the American Revolution Constitution Hall from 8:30 a.m. till 10:30 a.m. All are welcome.

ProLifeCon 2020 -- On January 24 at 8:30 a.m., also before the March, pro-life digital activists will gather at Family Research Council headquarters for the 15th annual ProLifeCon Digital Action Summit, the premier conference for the digital pro-life community. We will be joined by the most successful digital activists who will share their strategies of the past year and look ahead to opportunities in the new year. Activists, policy experts, and legislators will be on hand to discuss the issues impacting the pro-life movement and share practical ways to make a difference for life on prominent digital channels and platforms like blogs, social media, podcasts, and digital entertainment.

Annual March for Life -- The March will take place Friday, January 24 from 12 p.m. until 4 p.m. The Rally begins at noon at 12th Street on the National Mall. The March follows immediately around 1 p.m. -- marchers will proceed peacefully up Constitution Ave. to the U.S. Supreme Court. At the end of the March, outside the U.S. Supreme Court on First Street, NE., Silent No More will be presenting testimonies. This would be an excellent time to visit your elected members of the U.S. House or Senate.

  • May God bless each of these events and others taking place in Washington, D.C. and cities and towns across America with heaven-sent protection from every kind of mishap. May He provide excellent weather and smooth traffic and transportation. May the growing majority of pro-life Americans and the joy-filled attitudes of the advocates of life always prevail (in visible contrast to the sour dispositions of those who advocate for the abortion industry and the culture of death) and impassion the hearts of those who have remained uninvolved. May the news media capture the spirit of the event and give the events the coverage they deserve. May the pro-life speakers be anointed with power to get their message across and change the hearts of the hearers. And may the dedicated prayer and action of God's people continue to produce transformation in our nation until every American comes to understand and revere the sanctity of human life -- assured that every person -- born, unborn, young, and old -- is created in the image of God, and deserving of the constitutionally guaranteed right to life from conception until natural death. May this be the year that the U.S. Supreme Court supports every pro-life case that comes before it and may it rule to repeal Roe v. Wade. May the American people continue their incredible push to change state laws to promote life and end abortion. In Jesus' name, Amen! (Ex 20:13Num 6:23-26; Dt 30:19; Ps 35:27; 91: all; 110:3; 139:allLk 4:17-19; 107:1-2; Php 3:14; 4:4)

Finally, keeping in mind the incredible opportunity God has given us through prayer, please add these items to your active prayer list: 1) Great pro-life news from the states: West Virginia and Ohio are considering a born-alive infant protection law. Nebraska has introduced a dismemberment abortion ban, Florida has introduced a high priority bill to require parental consent before a minor can obtain an abortion, and Indiana is considering expanding their laws requiring the respectful disposal of fetal remains. Hear Tony and FRC State Director Quena Gonzalez discuss these and more state initiatives. See Born Alive Protection Map; 2) Despite President Trump's defunding of Title X dollars for Planned Parenthood, they made more money and committed more abortions than ever before, proving that past government funding has been little more than a political reward to an organization whose primary purpose is terminating preborn children. The nation's largest abortion network committed 345,672 abortions in 2018 according to its most recent annual report, up nearly 13,000 from 332,757 the previous year; 3) Planned Parenthood of Annapolis, Maryland announced its plans this week for a $2 million expansion in expectation of a 66 percent business increase in the near future since the state legislature voted to replace lost federal funds with state taxpayer dollars. Nearby Virginia, which became a "Blue State" in last year's November election, is expected to redouble its pro-abortion efforts in 2020 despite Governor Ralph Northam's shameless endorsement of post-birth abortion last year (see The Real Planned Parenthood: Leading the Culture of Death (updated for 2020); 4) Pro-lifers are praying for miracles in the upcoming U.S. Supreme Court consideration of a Louisiana law that requires abortion clinics to have admitting privileges at a nearby hospital. FRC has submitted an amicus brief in support of the law. Pro-lifers, including 39 U.S. Senators hope this will be the big case before the Supreme Court that turns the tide on Roe v. Wade.

Thank you for being one of the world-changing prayer warriors Derek Prince wrote about!
