Prayer Targets: Stand and Pray Under God During Challenging Times
January 20, 2021
Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations. (Jeremiah 1:5 ESV)
Dear Praying Friends,
Strength for the Days and Years Ahead -- You may have noticed that FRC is intentionally putting the source of our policy thought and ideas out front and public. Unapologetically, our biblical values and worldview are at the core of our ministry. We make every effort to be sure our beliefs, viewpoint, ideas, reasoning, philosophy, opinion, and judgment regarding American public policy flow from and square with the Truth of God's word as enlightened by the Holy Spirit. This requires devotion, prayer, and ongoing study of God's word -- for the sake of our own spiritual lives and ministry to others. Daily Bible reading, being part of a strong Bible-believing, practicing, and praying local church that encourages believers to be salt and light in our culture and prays for our leaders in government is essential. It's also important to connect with groups like FRC who are working to advance godly public policy and to be part of a prayer group that covers these matters for your well-being, the advance of the gospel in the next few years, and for you and your family to make a difference amid what promises to be an onslaught of "progressive" public policy that opposes just about everything Bible-believing Christians, churches, and families hold sacred.
Prayer AND Bible Study -- I want to urge our prayer partners, if you do not already have an organized and rigorous Bible reading plan, to join us at FRC and thousands of friends and supporters in reading through the Scriptures in chronological order. In just 20 minutes each day, Monday-Saturday, with Sunday reserved for rest and for pondering and discussing how to apply what we've read to our lives, we will read through the entire 66 books of the Bible in two years. Go to Stand on the Word and sign up to join us and receive the two-year plan in weekly segments by either email or text or both. There is no cost, but the investment of a little of your time is guaranteed to change your life and make you saltier, brighter, and more effective in your life and ministry (Ps 1: all; Mt 5:13-14).
What America Has Needed and Needs Now Is God -- All people need to seek Him, find Him, know Him, and obey Him. Our Forefathers knew this. Even those who did not have a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ had a fundamental fear of God and respect for the moral laws of God as embodied in the Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes, which were built into our national life and public traditions. This is tragically no longer true. But the greatest statesmen in American history magnified prayer, God's word, and the moral law it contained. They called for days of prayer: local, regional, statewide, and national prayer. They called all Americans to prayer and repentance and to morality in keeping with God's laws. Local, state and federal laws reflected those values. Preachers warned of God's judgments for sin and the blessing for holy living, and governors and presidents called for corporate prayer, calling all Americans to unite in prayer. Over the past year, Tony Perkins has endeavored to lead FRC staff in our work and workplace to carefully make our personal relationships and corporate devotion to the Lord the foundation for and substance of our daily work. The God of the Bible is what America needs. Without growth among God's people, devotion, Bible knowledge, godly living, and influence -- bringing stronger spiritual impact upon our fellow countrymen and women and our institutions, including our state and national governments -- the next two years look very bleak, with liberal majorities in both houses of Congress and the White House.
Over the past year, FRC's daily activities and ministry have been retooled to make sure that before we get into the nitty gritty of our heavy workload, prayer, Bible study, and discussion are the norm for every employee. It is refreshing and uplifting to give God first place when we get to the office. Deliberately studying Scripture and discussing its implications for us has made God's presence among us very real and our labors together richer. God has made us stronger spiritually and is fitting us with new strength, wisdom, and courage for this special time. Furthermore, Tony has made our weekly PrayVoteStand prayer event a powerful time of refocusing and prayer that encourages and informs longtime prayer warriors as well as those just beginning their walk with the Lord to understand the practical application, breadth, and power of prayer not only in our families and churches, but for our nation. In PrayVoteStand, Tony brings together leaders in government and the church who share their important insights into the direction of our nation, then leads us in prayer over the issues critical to our nation's future. Prayer has been an important aspect of FRC's ministry for many years, but we know it is even more important now than ever.
In addition to our Stand Courageous Men's conferences and preaching as he has time in churches across America on weekends, Tony hosts a nationwide daily radio program, Washington Watch, and he ministers a short early-morning Bible message each day via Facebook Live on his personal Facebook page from among the Stand on the Word Bible reading plan we are using at FRC. His messages are meaty, in-depth, instructive, edifying, and powerful, especially given their short duration. I urge all who read the Prayer Targets to get to utilize the resources he and FRC have made available to both serve you and to impact our federal and state government for righteousness and public policy God can bless.
Please stand with us in prayer and as able by supporting our many efforts. Our challenges will be greater than any time in our 38-year history.
- Oh God, this new administration promises radical new changes. Be with Tony Perkins, FRC and all those who pray with us and support us. Help us to soldier up, not with carnal armor and weapons, but with spiritual. The Biden administration and Congress have promised to enact public policies beyond anything we have ever faced as a people before. Their promises shake our sensibilities, challenge our most sacred values, our faith, our consciences, and our Christian and American traditions. Many believers feel like throwing in the towel and giving up. But such is not an option. We were born to take a righteous stand amid what we are seeing. We must take hold of You, God, and be prepared and ready to do all You call us to do, and, "after we have done all to stand" (Eph 6) -- immovable, unbendable, praying and exercising our faith together, more than ever. Jesus, you said all things are possible with God (Mt 19:26) and that "with God, nothing shall be is impossible" (Lk 1:37). Help us to be strong in the Lord and in the power of Your might! May we put on the full armor of God -- each of us armed with the Word of God to pray for Your plan and purposes in our nation to prevail. Help to arm us with spiritual (not carnal) weapons. Lord, you know the new administration has declared its intention to undo everything President Trump has accomplished, his protections for life, religious liberty, and the family. Help us to pray as we ought for the new president as You expressly command (1 Tim 2:1-2) but help us to pray against the many planned initiatives that contradict Your plain word. End the hatred that has characterized the past four years. Grant us civility and the ability to love as You have commanded us -- even those who hate us. Intervene to save our nation, Lord, and to set us on a course You can bless and not curse. In Jesus' Name, amen.
